Days of slaves, threats of pain
Boss man is coming, whip and chains
Worked all day, From break of dawn
Been running all night, going home.
~*~
Salty sweat, arrest the pain
slinking between, shadows and light
Ain't singing no song
On a deadly night
Just thinking of home.
~*~
Prayers are foggy
distant, are the howling of hounds
Desperately gaining, on a soul in fright
Lightning flashes, high above.
~*~
Rain pelting pain
scent of death, hot on his trail
Nightmares in mind
Running, running, Lord give me strength
Horror reigns
No more whipping, no more pain.
~*~
Back scared, deep to the soul
Leathered hard
eyes closed praying
Wishing words unheard
Ain't no southern fruit
Blood on the leaves, blood on the roots.
~*
Death, desired at times
Hunger pangs, must survive
Bitter food, taste unknown
Howling hounds, prowling near.
~*~
Train whistle blowing
In the thick summer night
Rail road heard
Cluttering sounds, of steam and thunder.
~*~
Days of slaves,
A taste of freedom, near at hand
engine slowing, on dead man's curve
Howling hounds, fading away.
~*~
Secured and warm, North bound train
Heart sings, thoughts of home
No more whipping, no more pain
Lord is with him, Humming a song.

How very sad this beautifully written poem is William...There is nothing in the world like freedom....floria
William this is really fantastic. Your descriptons bring the reader to a better understanding of how slavery must feel. A wonderful finale, filled with hope!
