This is the real me...a sort of Julia Sugarbaker (from "Designiing Women")type...proud Rebel from Dixie.
Dad's voice creeps up every now and then
Thoughts of his honesty and all that has been
Digested and framed since he went away
Days that I miss...when he would say,
"Leave her alone, Kate", the girls got ginger
Comes from the genes...her piss and vinegar."
This was his answer when I'd get antsy
Shoot off my mouth extremely brave with a fancy
Curt verbage for females just wasn't the norm
Nor accepted ways for young girls to perform
But I was different...always had My view
I was important and somehow I knew
That my thoughts made a difference
Adult folks would "head up!"
To bend an ear closer to the voice of this pup
Wisdom and logic came easy for me
As dad and my elders were wise too you see
They passed on to me the knowledge of age
It came rather quick for this solid young babe
I knew I was other than norm...a winner
With table-top logic and tad piss and vinegar
I was head sis of eight and wiser than most
No childhood for me but my honor would boast
The sense of a woman and the face of a kid
Decisions were nothing for me as it did
Come about easy with dedicated trust
From loins of the Dutch and free wonderlust
I was a princess..all soft and tender
Except when my rebel side
Spit out piss and vinegar!
Hooray for your "piss and vinegar" I hope you never cease to speak your mind. Humanity needs more people like you. It's a joy to read your writings. Pierre.
Oh Susan, this reminded me of my sis, Cheri, and when you told of being the eldest--bingo! Grins and laughter of recognition. She was the "head sis of eight and wiser than most" also. God I miss her! She was the glue of this family. Absolutely wonderful write!!
Being different I know, more different with each instant that passes in time in an incerasing number of places, stranger by the second to more than ever before. This cannot remain without consequence indefinitely - one time, one place we'll be interrogated and judged for being different from the rest. We'll prefer to die rather than to comply. Some P & V may come in handy then.
This is incredible... even more so cos I've just tuned into song lyrics by my fave blues guitarist, Eric Bibb, and wondered what was meant by "piss and vinegar"!! NOW I KNOW!! He was talkin about YOU!! You are the original Girl Power... well, you and Scarlette O'Hara, I guess!! Nuthin more awesome than a girl who knows her stuff, I reckon... I was always a silent shadow as a child... it shows, don't it??!! :)) Love the vim and the vigour and the downright proud honesty of knowing oneself and not shying away from that... Bet you could give Hilary a run for her money... !! LOL Kate xx
Haven't heard that phrase since my grandmother used it. Mostly German, in those days, my piss was vinager ;-). I, too, stopped smoking at seven because it was stupid, and made mostly wise decisions that kept my twin and I out of trouble except when I broke things trying them out.
Well written and well said and after our numerous conversations equally applies to the woman today as it did to the girl back then. I think we were poured from the same vial or vials so to speak for more then once I felt the crack of a yard stick, strap, or the back of a hand for my own outspokeness but hey we are the voice of the questions.

My comments are short and sweet, not piss and vineger, I'm still pissed about what I wrote in my poem tonight. Still, I know that piss and vineger is what makes you . . . you!!!!!

Never hedging and seeing things for what they are is a gift!
Gotta love the rebel in us, I think it's one of those attributes that keeps us creating.
