Behind Those Eyes
~
My mom is an 85 yr old woman,
who sometimes does not see so well.
The cataract surgery on both eyes,
over 2 years ago is considered a
failure in my book.

She has difficulty in discerning
which daughter is talking to
her, but can read the orange juice
carton verbatim.
~
It’s hard to determine her thought process,
that is, unless you try to fool her
mom engages readily in conversation quite
readily, seems to thrive at “day care” because
she loves the interaction with others her age.
~
My mother is fragile, mobile with the aid of a walker,
because she fractured her second hip last year. Says
she is scared of falling ( who isn’t ), and a charmer.
You must give her one thing to do at a time.
~
Meal time is her favorite, she does well with
pureed foods. Everything goes into the blender along
with chicken broth to make meals tastier
~
If you ever want to know what is on her mind, test
her, but be warned, she will not hesitate to tell you.
This is the woman who single-handedly intimidated
any boyfriend she didn’t approve of.
~
There are so many precious memories we ask her about.
Sometimes, she wistfully elaborates on countless details
about the past; at other times, would let us know,
(by the intonation in her voice) that she is here with us,
 in the present
…so always take a close look at
                                                what’s behind those eyes
