I've Had a Good Life

Life has been pretty good to me once I get past that one big "Nightmaire," which was the death of my wife at an early age

I’VE HAD A GOOD LIFE

Mostly, it’s been a pretty good life
and I’ve lived most all my dreams.
I’ve also lived some nightmares,
at least that’s the way it seems.

I didn’t plan on being single
for all these twenty years,
but no one gets through life
without some occasional tears.

She didn’t want to leave me,
nor did I want for her to leave.
And, as the end was near
I tried so very hard to believe.

It still troubles me some,
was I the one to blame?
If I’d have prayed a little harder,
would it have still come out the same?

When we went to that Faith Healer,
if I’d been more convinced,
when he laid hands upon her
would her chances have been enhanced?

I’ve never had a lot of goals
and none were set too high.
I’ve never wanted for much,
just wanted to somehow get by.

And those few goals I set,
well I think I attained them all.
There could be one or two I missed,
but none that I recall.

Pretty much, I take life as it comes,
I’ve never made a lot of plans.
I never planned to be a banker,
never planned on owning land.

Never thought about having a family
or such a wonderful wife.
I’ve always taken one day at a time
just working my way through life.

I’ve had a few regrets,
but probably no more than most.
Probably the biggest one I have,
she missed out on the Treasure Coast.

Now that I’m in my sixty’s
and the end’s just over the horizon,
I’ve started thinking about my mortality,
guess that’s not really so surprising.

There’s a lady in my dreams
and somewhere she dreams of me.
Some day when we meet
we’ll be as happy as can be.

But, it’s not all that easy,
awaiting that special day.
I’m afraid we’ll run out of time,
still trying to find our way.

Oh, I know she’ll be worth the wait
and we’ll steal moments here and there,
but I want to be with her now,
we‘ve so much yet to share.

I think about her often,
but for now, I bide my time.
And, I while away my days
putting thoughts of her in rhyme.
