A Century Ago

Gulu was a farmer
He was a fisherman
He was a herdsboy
He was brave in his own way

He was a herbalist
He was an astrologist
He was a total man
He was an African

He knew how to weave thread
He knew how to make shoes
He cut twigs to carve tools
He never depended on donations

He had a culture of his own
He ruled with customary laws
He felt proud of his values
He was a typical African

He admired the beauty of nature
He had spiritual connections with it
He beat drums, played guitar
He drank from streams of rivulets

Behind his grey huts
there lied a vast ocean
In the expanding horizon of the sea
A strange object came into sight

A colonial vessel "Regina" appeared upon the scene
As it drew closer to the beach
Gulu grabbed his war items

A spear, a bow and an arrow
was all he had in his possession
"Set not a foot on this soil
sail back ... or else" shouted Gulu

Regina had superior weaponry
At close range, it coughed fire
Things went out of hand
Gulu was silenced

Africa, the cradle of civilization, is overwhelmed by a century old silence.
When shall it speak up?
