Millions of girls around the moslem world undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) every year yet the Islamic religion does not allow girl's parts to be mutilated stitched and infibulated. Those who practice it are paying heed to what the devil calls for them rather than listening to what Prophet Muhammad has said in His religious teachings. This message goes not only to Moslems but also to those non-moslems across the world who practice FGM. In the UK a law was passed to punish anyone found circumcising a girl thus creating a huge contorversy over the cultural values and spiritual beliefs of several communities like Somalis residing in that country. To escape the law, they are sending girls to Africa to do the operation and then return the child to the UK. Such trafficking also takes place in other European countries where the practice is punishable by imprisonment. In this poem I wish to alert the Somalis in the Diaspora to know that FGM has no religious base and should not be done in anyway and under any circumstance. Here inside the country, the challenge is tough though there are efforts to eradicate this illegal operation. As an activist I raise my voice to make it heard by all Somalis both at home and abroad. If you happen to be in a place where the practice is carried out please do the same. My 28-minute documentary film on the rights of women is already out and won large audience inside the country though some have challenged me of touching issues that are culturally considered to be a taboo. At any cost I should continue my struggle to stop evil.

Anytime I try to educate the people
You step in to destablize the flow
You close any window I manage to open
You want people locked up in the dark
You don't want them to see the light
You claim to be a Somali and a Moslem
Yet you act against the Islamic belief
Your evil practices are anti-islamic
In your hand you have a sharp knife
You mutilate a girl's private parts
You cut her entire external genitalia
You call it a cultural rite of passage
But you are committing a serious crime
You must be brought to justice
FGM is a moral equivalent of murder
Under the Islamic jurisdiction
You either pay blood compensation
Or rot in prison till you pass away
If you are a Moslem please stop FGM
