While Watching CNN on that fateful Tuesday of September 11, 2001 Waris, a Somali-American women in Los Angels saw an explosion in the World Trade Center. The scene was horrible and harrowing. She was expecting her husband to arrive that day and with the same plane she saw crashing into the North Tower. Waris got shocked. But much to her surprise, she received a call from her husband who, by virtue of fate, missed the plane. Let’s see how she received the call and how she felt about the whole tragedy.

As I heard his voice,
My heart jolted with feelings of disbelief
My eyes flushed out tears of Joy
My scattered brain jerked to regain balance

As I heard his voice
I felt like coming back to my former soul
A little bit agile though, like a resurrected corps
My feet reclaimed their responsibility to hold me firmly

Before Warsame injected life into my cellphone
The house was dominated by grief and agony
It was dead with shock
It was dead with gloom and silence

As he let his voice wade through space
Drops of hope started to drizzle in my heart
His words generated stability and comfort
They were as glaring as a lighthouse in the midnight sky

All of a sudden the children were animated with happiness
They exchanged hugs and kisses to share a wonderful moment
Blended with their merry shouts were poppy’s cries
It barked and waged its tail in deep excitement

“Hi sweetie” came from the other end right into my eardrum
His voice was soft and incredibly sweet. It was not husky, nor hoarse.
It was rich and potentially inspiring. Rich with the ingredients it always contained
Rich in human concern. Rich in human touch.

As I turned the phone line off, my eyes fell on the TV screen
And again another crash took place.
A passenger plane mutated into a jet fighter
The south tower was hit this time

I saw half of it crumbling over
I saw people running for their lives
I saw firemen bravely rushing in amid clouds and whoozing flame
I saw sister towers drowning in a sea of despair

I gasped for a breath like a baby on his way to go
“This is terrorism” I told myself. “America is under attack”
What a nasty human tragedy.
What a great loss!

Many a wife a spouse lost a dear partner
Many a child was orphaned
Many a parent lost sons and daughters
Still many others lost their beloved ones

Though my husband is alive and well
Celeberation is not for me today
My cup of joy is only half full
I share the pain with the bereaved.

Blessed are those who care for humanity
Blessed are those who love peace
Cursed are those who kill innocent people
Be them Moslems, Christians or Jews.

Oh America, ………
Combat terror but kill not for vengeance
Cooperate with the world
Catch a straw. Curb the problem

Sometimes fate does us a kindness, but unfortunately, it happens seldom in this world. Perhaps it may be different in the next.

Your poem brings out the feelings of grief and horror felt by all who witnessed this tragedy, whether they lost loved ones or not. I will never forget that day either, I had just left Safeways Supermarket here in Malton, England and was sitting in a queue at the traffic lights when I heard the news on the radio. My blood ran cold. I will never understand anyone killing for the sake of religious fanaticism.

Just one thing - perhaps you mean "like a resurrected corpse", not corps. Both would have a totally different meaning.

Any act of war or terror is always two sided. Seemingly, it is the cause of joy for the victor and cause of tears for the vanquished...I am sure there were similar feelings in the hearts of Afghans who survived the aftermath. So is the cup even half full after all?, Nevertheless, beautiful work

A tragedy. I still think we should level the ground these people walk on so they don't breed any more fantacism. God is truly having a heart attack. They would rather destroy, even in their own countries, than build and educate. Sad, no matter which side you are on. This is a wonderful work.

You know, if I were a drowning woman I certainly would not care what color, religion or nationality the one who threw the life preserver might be! Compelling write.

Many lives were touched that day. The only explanation I have for someone like your loved one being spared is the vagaries of chance, as so many lost were good people as well as your husband.
