So often I am stunned by
The pervasiveness of powerlessness
The way it succinctly suffocates
Everything in its path
Wooing bitterness
And dismembering dreams
How it hardens the hearts
Of its innocent victims
Stripping them of dignity
And leaving them dazed
It always happens too
Everyday
All over the planet
A child will get beaten
Physically, mentally abused
So the child begs for salvation
It prays
"God please make mommy and daddy stop
Please God I promise I will be good
Please make them love me
I will be good
I promise"
Or there is the other option
The little ones who get sick
Oh so very sick
Ambulance comes
It’s the middle of the night
The loving parents pray
"Lord please save my child
I promise I will love them
I promise I will love you
I promise I will do whatever you ask"
And then there is the injured child
Falls off the monkey bars
Parents run around screaming and crying
"Please God,
Please I’ll do anything if you save my child"
But their prayers never get answered
The abused continue to suffer
Their souls crushed under the weight of
POWERLESSNESS
The others
They wither away and...
I won't give in
I will stare powerlessness in the eye
And cry
God I promise you
If we ever meet face to face
If you really do exist
Which you don’t
I already know
But just in case
Listen to me
I am going to take my soul
And wrap it around your cold
Stony heart
And I am going to tighten my grip
Until the world stops
Feeling pain
I will release
The sorrows of people
I will give hope
To the hungry
I will fight
For what is right
And not for glory
Or a reward in the afterlife
But for the future
For the next generation
For the tomorrow before it becomes yesterday
