Imagine a court of law without defenders. What type of justice would there be?
******************
“Order in the court!
All rise … here comes the Judge!”
“Be seated. Court’s in session!”
“Vagabond, vacant eyes—
who cares if this one cries?”
“I do … he’s my brother!”
“Who speaks for this woman …
street-walker, thief, phantom?
“I do … she’s my sister!”
This drunk in the alley …
does he have an ally?
“He does … he’s my father!”
“Who’ll defend, without pay,
she gave her child away?”
“I will … she’s my mother.”
The Judge peered down at me.
“You’re kin? How can that be?”
“All have the same parents—
the same inheritance—
all are one family.
Languages change, each name,
color, belief, distain,
split by evil … insane!
But for His Grace, could be
you would be judging me.”
