Thriving in the shadows’ sheen
(unsmothered by fall)
flowers ever bloom.
Sunlight shines, heat penetrates
(dazzling the die-hards)
as gardens do bed.
Leaves huddle, roll out the mulch
‘cause night’s gonna freeze
the spit from earth’s sneeze.
Disiccating winter winds
seep into the soil
(worms flee as they toil).
Russet, golden hued leaves crushed
swirl in the whirl winds.
Like powder they’re thrust
to molecules, dust.
December, no green things,
gardens are abed
to sleep. They’re not dead!
