Once upon a time green lay the valley, warm amber sunlight flooding every breath, the sun a swelling golden blister on the face of the soft blue sky.
In a glowing moment I revealed the hidden language of Blue Cranes to the Woman-Who-Sings-In-The-Summer-Valley and then it all faded away: like a heart song, haunting and lovely.
I roamed and I wrote a handful of songs and recorded a few and somewhere along the way I wrote books and read every word. I bought a house with a dribble of money but I just couldn’t stay and when I returned it was worth far less than I paid.
3am Moonlight
I met Chloe in Virginia and Suzette in Spain and Madeline in France.
I travelled to England but it wasn’t the same.
Sheila said she loved me but she couldn’t even remember my name.
So I wrote a new handful of songs and recorded a few and somewhere down the road I wrote books too; and I guess it would be fair to say I stayed behind when the world moved on, lost in the music and the haunt of a song in a book, and I read every word.
3am Moonlight
I wish I could slow down, but I’m racing inside and I just can’t seem to stop I’ve forgotten how, and what sense I own goes AWOL don’t you know and I’m locked in a race to the grave.
3am Moonlight
I made some money but it wasn’t much in return for all the songs and the books I wrote; and I swear to God it’s not true what they say, but I just can’t recall signing it all away.
So I wrote more songs and recorded a few and somewhere down the road I wrote books too.
I met Maureen in Ireland and Jennifer in Wales; Laura in New York and Yasmine in Morocco where the tea is strong.
3am Moonlight
Marie in Mexico asked if I’d write her a song; and what about that book in your head she said, and later is as later does and I swear I can’t recall signing it all away.
3am Moonlight and I thought;
if you help me I’ll be your friend and if you catch me when I fall, I’ll write you a song and a book or two. I’ll read every word and I swear to God you can have it all every note, every song, every book, every word if you will be there to catch me when I fall.
3am Moonlight
Alone with a ghost in my head
I wish you were here
I wish you were my friend
You can have it all every song every book
If you will just catch me when I fall
3am Moonlight
And I recall in a distant sort of hazy once upon a time kind of way when green lay the valley. Warm amber sunshine flooding every breath and tomorrow was so far away each hour I lived was enough for today; and then the ghost in my head whispered “you can always return but you can never go back” and I swear its not true what they say but I just can’t recall signing it all away.
3am Moonlight
Strands of moonlight tangle the leaves. The air is cool and still. I need to sleep but I cannot. The Hidden Language of Blue Cranes fills my head and I wonder; I wonder in a mild sort of way if I will meet Woman- Who-Sings-In-The-Summer-Valley again in this life: the moon hangs low in the sky. I feel slow inside 3am moonlight.
