 Turn off your mind

Excitement and vigor
in those tiny eyes,
too much vitality
in a body so concise.
And every day a battle fought
with sleep always
on enemy lines.
The fight lasted but a little time
and soon those very eyes
Would tire and accept their demise.
Only to start anew
a long fought battle
old rivalry renewed.
And with that resolve
to bed she goes
with the covers up to her chin
To her, her mother sings

 O child of mine
Go to sleep
Close your eyes
turn off your mind
For tomorrow the world
will reset itself
So put all your worries
upon that shelf
Let not the dark
make you cumber
Put out your flair
give way to slumber

She woke up,
ready to fight
Only to find her hands tied.
Her valor drained
they slayed her pride.
Her ingenuity seized
a prisoner was she
Bound by angst, now a
member of the melee.
Who once thought in color
now painted in greys
Those eyes, that smiled
were now glazed
The very people that
taught her to think
Gave her a pen
took away the ink
So now she sits
With her knees up to her chin
All alone to herself she sings

 O child of mine
Go to sleep
Kill the light in your eyes
Turn off your mind
For tomorrow the world
will reset itself
But all your worries will
remain on that shelf
For the dark will
make you cumber
So put out your flair
never wake it from its slumber

Very disturbing and sad. I wonder what experience brought this poem to life.

I can relate to "her." I know how she feels and what she's going through. A meaningful and moving poem, TeeJay. Love and peace to you,

Regis

A thinking kind of a poem, giving the reader hope in the mother's song, and despair in the awakened child who sings her own self.
