cool sand shaped to his back
he floats away on the call of the surf
deep into a bygone place

sensing the sizzling of onions
and sweet smell of cheese steaks
from the philly sub shop opposite the bus depot
as she steps from the greyhound

a few added years, an extra pound or two
but still that comic smile he recalls
on halcyon nights like this

they embrace

and the lavender scent of her yellow hair
summons the afternoon they met
at the campus canteen
she sipping a root beer float

and laughing when he sings along
with the jukebox, doing his silly imitation
of sinatra imitating him

imitating sinatra swinging

just one of those nights
just one of those fabulous flights
a trip to the moon on gossamer wings
just one of those things

this is adorable!! isn't it wonderful how the mind and the heart can bring back the wonderful flighty feelings of a fond memory and especially Sinatra!!! My mom was crazy about him and his records were always spinning at my house. I know his tunes by heart. even played musical chairs one of his hits. HA!! back at ya!! life is meant to be silly and fun and filled with moments like this. Enjoy

Gene - Liked the way the humorous title leads into a profound experience. Your vivid imagery brought me into that experience also. Enjoyed the alternation of the the simple expression and the profound, summed up beautifully with the quote of the Sinatra song:

just one of those nights
just one of those fabulous flights
a trip to the moon on gossamer wings
just one of those things

Nostalgia wears a pocket watch with a chain of golden events timed on memory lane, Gene...here's a quarter for the Wurlitzer and blue eyes...a visit back is a smile forward...it's good to be here on this site again...I send my love and a spare penny-loafer shoebox for your shiny photographic quill...just pull one of your nostalgic memories out of the cardboard and turn it into a timeless classic...you do these so well you know...

Love,
Sage

Some things never really change, such as a memory of the way things were and can still be. My husband tells me I haven't changed a bit since the first time he laid eyes on me, just to think that was 45 years ago, lol. I must have been a real cute way back then. Thank you for sharing Gene.

Gene, 'the reunion' is well captured not just through physical senses and memory but more tellingly through atmosphere, the inner snapshots...and I admire the choice of language and phrase and the simple elegant structure of the poem.

For you, it's the ocean, for me it's the forest - I've just come in from floating on fall breezes surrounded by crickets and grasshoppers singing from their grassy, mossy homes. The sun warmed my face and my hand-knitted scarf (a gift from one of several great aunts) still carries the fragrant breath of the day. These are perfect ways to savor memories of bygone times.
