Senectitude

He envisions a wrinkled time and place
he does not know,
does not care to know,
a cheerless age absent sunlight
or the healthy scent of life remembered.
Dull edges of his mind attempt
to slice through acrid doubts that screen him
from the vigor of a sweeter age,
a time of fleeting youth on the wing.

He gropes through senescent haze
in silent search
of the day of the week.

Fitful hours recur more and more frequently
as his muddled mind slips through
the tarnished screen
of a narrow opening on the night,
guided by an insistent but gentle nudge
to a secluded time and place where
phantom shadows cling to tenuous days.

Nothing wrinkled or old here, rather Gene has given us a taste of a timeless medley of this wise old poet's regaling with tears of yesteryears lamented again and again.

A skillful poem on aging. It reminds me of my poem The Mermaids Singing Hush, however, that one is about my father.

I felt this poem.

The murky haze of aging and memories...intertwining with regret, peace, & childhood joys.
The last stanza was my favorite, especially the culmination of the last line.

Gene,
A sharp and aware soul permeates this expressed haze, each phrase so appropriate to the theme, and the thrust of reality without any cloying sentimentality makes it a very fine thoroughly thought through poem.

A long gray whisper of a poem! My theory is that we fall into the past when we can no longer keep up with the present. Write On!

I sometimes wonder, if I were able to get all those past years back, would I live them differently....and if so, how. Loved this, Gene.

Gene - Had to google the title, but your poem offers a better definition. Old age is not for wimps. Love the lines,

He gropes through senescent haze
in silent search of the day of the week.

and the imagery of:

Fitful hours recur more and more frequently
as his muddled mind slips through
the tarnished screen
of a narrow opening on the night,

-David

Gene:

This was a very expressive poem. You have execute your emotions and feelings about aging; but sometimes a person is only as old as he/she feels.

A well-expressed poem and well written!!!

too easily I recall dismissing inordinate days like a drunk in an alcoholic haze -- letting time I did not have to spare, time that I would only later realize, was not an inexhaustible gift bequeathed to me by my creator -- waste away in pursuit of frivolities -- now, yes now, it is all so clear, when making amends is not an option that I am able to exercise, why? -- to those of us that have the misfortune of experiencing this waste of the greatest ignorance, your poem is poignant my friend -- as it is with all of our work, Gene, you have masterfully executed the intent of your mission, entertain, and inform -- excellent work -- may peace and love comfort you and give great joy to your every venture my dear friend -- JMW

The roads we have travelled through life, I believe was meant to be to get us to where we are today. Would I change that? NOOOOOO. Thank you for sharing your words Gene.

Sometimes looking back and realizing all the time that was given to fruitless adventures can be disheartening. A sort of, "if I knew then what I know now", yet we all needed those times to appreciate growing up too, nicely put....

Be always safe,

Yep, those of us of a certain age are feelin you, Darlin, in this write... Is there an AD Home for us to go to when our mental ink eventually runs dry... or amok... or out the door screaming?! Love Billy Collins take on this creeping aptitude or ineptitude we can't possibly side-step... do listen to this link with his poem, Forgetfulness... tis a hoot... or a howl, depending on how you feel about all this! :)) xx
