A poem should not mean.
But be.

           --Archibald MacLeish

wrapped in the poetry,
the rise, the wane, the ache
of unrestrained love,

they ascend on the wings of words
in concert with the cosmos

until time reclaims the moon,

and tides are stilled,
and gulls are gone,
and tall yellowed grass bends under silent winds,
and towering pines weep,
and oceans speak in a muted bell,

and a thread of light from the sole surviving star
invades their dusty dream,
and restless shadows rekindle ashen desires
in a prolonged cosmic heartbeat…

and time sings off-key.

A haunting poem. This romance seems based on what truly matters. Great mood setting, too. Hugs,

adore the ending.
the offkilt swagger and stagger of intimacy.
the way a look sends explicit implicit notes of knowing impaling intensity.....
you hit all the right spots with this one.
its a soft sultry splendour.
and of course, my voodoo eyes read 'oceans s.peak'...and muted bell reminds me of plath, drowning herself [belljarish] and all her starcrossed love being. . ..
this is furiously flowing and crazily invasive.
like a shadowplay of serendipity.

until the last moment of never Gene -- at poets end, we will write the vanishing words that blend our essence into never more -- I am overtly jealous of your considerable talents as a poet Gene -- do not stop, send us more, and more to savor -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

"rekindle ashen desires" - Gene, this is just beautiful; it begs to be read aloud but just a heartbeat above a whisper. This, along with The Violet are heading into my 'favorites' file. Lovely!

Gene,
This has silkworm skill, a cocoon of natural sensuality romantically and elegantly woven; personally I like the dominant use of 'and' - it compels not just the poem but the reader and MacLeish's point is validated.

This is a wonderful creation. The "and's" are almost hypnotic, taking the reader to that edge. Time indeed sings off key, but ultimately everyone listens to the tune.

Hello Gene: It seems we each posted a poem within a minute of one another. Interestingly, both involve the word or idea of edge. Anyway, this is a whimsical, musical, lovely piece. As you know, I always admire your craft -- your way with assonance and alliteration. i also love the word "bell" in a poem, and especially here. I like that the word "dream" is singular, not plural. This poem makes me want to paint, as you paint with words. I do have one suggestion: the stanza with all the 'and's" -- maybe take a few out in the middle, leaving 2 in beginning, one at end. But anyway, a beautiful hymn. Now I want to write a piece of music. it's too bad we live so far from one another, making collaboration difficult. Which reminds me, would you like to collaborate on a poem, alternating our stanzas? thank you for this poem. i also like that time sings off-key.
