Joys of Summer

There’s really nothing
quite like a drowsy summer’s day,
spread-eagled in a bed of clover,
clutching a cold lager in one hand
and a soft pretzel in the other.

Just being lazy
listening to the bees hum,

when from an open window
on the boom box,
the Phillies and the Mets,
score tied and the Phils at bat
bottom of the ninth, bases loaded,
no one out…

and the pitcher pops a single,
electrifies the fans.

I tell the cat,
I think we’re on a winning streak.
The cat,
in her accustomed apprehension,
yawns.

mmmmmmmmmm :)
quite a picture.
content and str.etched out.
this is, though, how i usually spend my summer nights.
on a blanket; moon above; something soft in the ayre.
i hear so much in the quiet.
and you playfully 'penned' me there

A lazy summer day, such as our ancestors never knew! Loved this, and I can just see the two of you plus radio, pretzel and beer, lounging comfortably. This is what heaven outta be!

Gene - Enjoyed this. Listening to a baseball game on the radio has its advantages. Allows room for the imagination. I thought the Braves might make a run, but the Phillies won't lose and it's getting late in the day. Loved those last lines that put it all in perspective.

I tell the cat,
I think we’re on a winning streak.
The cat,
in her accustomed apprehension,
yawns.

hotdayummm... so typical! you paint a wonderful pastoral scene of loving tranquility that a gal might like to lie down quietly beside and listen romantically to the blackbird sing... and the bloody football on the tranny goes and ruins it! Looks like it's curling up with the cat, then... :)))))))))) My dog yawns when she's apprehensive, too... it usually signals that she's expecting me to read her one of my poems... no wonder she's gone deaf.... xxxxx

Move over, I can smell the clover in these lines, and the baceball ensemble suggests that a hotdog might be appropriate as well. Cats, well they are lovely but a dog is premo. Love it. Thank you Gene, Hugs, J'nia

You seem to capture the moment well!! Now why can't you write
about the Boston Red Sox or the New York Yankees???

I love baseball!!! It's as American as Apple Pie!! I have a picture
of my uncle with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. It was given to me by
my cousin. It's awesome!! Now that's a Yankee!!

Gene,
Perfect atmosphere and setting, quite blissful and deliciously lazy...but when it comes to baseball, a sport I know little or nothing about, I'm with the cat.

doesn't the cat's excitement overwhelm? -- summer, days to laze away -- earth enveloping your body in swaddling clothes of warmth -- imagination and a lager tugging gently at the creative side of you --what is not to like? -- I was totally relaxed after reading this poem Gene -- that takes a bit of doing for a guy who is usually at three times warp speed -- thanks for the moment of tranquility -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

Your word-images tell of a perfect Summer day, Gene...if you're experiencing cool weather. I can picture myself 60 years ago back in St. Louis; now I hibernate indoors in the A/C. Enjoyed your dream-like poem, friend!

Feline (if it is a she) doesn't rightly appreciate the clown ministry of Abbot & Costello...You're batting a thousand Gene! I think I am getting to second base, I love feline politics and the stalking spread-eagled in the clover...the head on the mug of lager trumps the pretzel...

Lou Costello: What's the guy's name on first base?

Bud Abbott: No. What is on second.

Lou Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second.

Bud Abbott: Who's on first.

Lou Costello: I don't know.

Bud Abbott: He's on third, we're not talking about him.

Lou Costello: Now how did I get on third base?

Bud Abbott: Why you mentioned his name.

Lou Costello: If I mentioned the third baseman's name, who did I say is playing third?

Bud Abbott: No. Who's playing first.

Lou Costello: What's on base?

Bud Abbott: What's on second.

Lou Costello: I don't know.

Bud Abbott: He's on third.

Lou Costello: There I go, back on third again!

Sage: Here I go again...feline politics, bases loaded!

Soft pretzels ... a beer ... and baseball? You got yourself a game! Excellent, Gene, a perfect way to spend the afternoon. However, me thinks my team needs the cat to claw them out of last place - poor Cleveland Indians!!

So many ideas of what a perfect summer day might entail. I bet your gulls would be more appreciative of the winning streak than your cat (or maybe they'd just be after the pretzel).
