Just close your eyes....

Poem Artwork

Their eyes met in the dim light
spirited away in conversation
scent of the sandalwood candle burning
both smile through its flickering light

She watches as his lips move
and her mind wanders to the sound of rain
tink… plunk… pitter patter… plunk plunk
it’s rhythm becoming stronger and faster

In the distance, through the rain-streaked window,
a single street lamp dimly shines through the rain
someone opens the door and a rush of cold air
sends chills down their body with a whoosh

The smell of the fresh rain fills the room
surrounding tables are now empty
waiters cleaning floors and tabletops briskly
glancing ever so often at the two who remain

She closes her eyes smelling the rain
the sound rhythmically singing to her soul
she opens her eyes and sees the curtain billow
a flash of lightening lights up the room

Settling deep into the warmth of her bed
she turns to watch his chest rise and fall
as she pulls the sheet up over his lengthy body
she brushes a wisp of hair from his forehead…

Strong images of the power of the storm and the comfort of being in someone else's arms. Sometimes I wish for a tin roof so I can hear the full effect of the rain on it.

Carolee, you've done an excellent job of opening the doors of our imagination...Your poem reminds me of a short story written by Ernest Hemingway, titled "A Clean and Well Lighted Place" written while he was in Spain...your reference to the waiters with glances to the 'two'...Nice work.
Cheers,
Dan

Was it all a dream, a beautiful dream?!?!
Not all as it ends up with a tender romantic moment when she, very caring, pulls up the sheets and brushes a wisp of hair from his forehead.

Beautiful and romantic Carol

This had me going, in fact it surprised me going from the room with the tables to her bedroom so quickly, I thought the woman must have been dreaming. Whatever! I may have been confused about that, but I wasn't confused about how you managed to make the words flow in a romantic and real-time love affair.
