Outside my bedroom window there stands a gum tree
Covered in yellow blossom, it is a sight to see
There is a little possum that lives among the branches
Huge black eyes and bushy tail, his life is full of chances.
Down the trunk and across the yard his tiny legs make haste
He rounds the shed he’s nearly there; he has no time to waste
There are scraps in my bin that I threw out this night
And now he rummages with great delight.
Finding a morsel that he thinks is ideal
He makes a break for the trees to enjoy his new meal.
But halfway across he spots Tom the feline
So close is his tree he decides for a beeline.
Tommy is quick and blocks possum’s run
Possum stopped in his tracks his heart beating a ton
Then he veered left and ran under the house
With Tom in pursuit of that frightened wee louse.
There’s a ruckus and din, right under my floor
And I fear the wee possum may rummage no more
But sight of sights, its Tom in full flight!
Racing across the yard to disappear in the night.
Now Bluey the heeler was under there napping
And when Tom bowled into him, he woke up snapping
While Tom was busy trying to get himself free
Wee possum was dining in the safety of his tree

Notice I'm choosing your lighter poems to read, building up to one of the serious ones.
