My brother has fallen victim to Alzheimer's, and with it has come an unfamiliar look.
An Unfamiliar Look
My brother is drifting far from shore.
Each time I see him,
He still knows me by name,
Yet he’s wafted even farther away.
Now, when we’re together,
Our conversation is one-sided:
I ask all the questions,
And he responds with “yes” or “no”—
No filling in with details of his own.
It used to not be this way,
For he was the focus of interest
At all our family gatherings.
Our nephews would encircle him,
Bending over with laughter
From his sidesplitting jokes and anecdotes. Was his mirth found in others
Only to cover up the pain he held within? Who knows?
Such pride he had in his six sons.
Gabe, his baby, was tragically taken
At the tender age of three—
Killed by their family dog!
Years of pain had slipped past
When Joe Michael, his oldest,
Passed on from a massive heart attack.
Over time he seemed all right.
However, one Easter Sunday,
The glue that held him together—
His dear wife, Donna Mae—moved to heaven.
Oft times he would say to me,
“I think about them all the time
And awaken at night
From some sort of dream world—
Donna’s calling my name.”
I would listen—wait to hear more.
Now, he wears a mysterious smile
And has an unfamiliar look in his eyes,
As though he’s thinking…reflecting. What is he meditating upon?
It haunts me, and I wonder.
Even though I can
Place my arms around him
And whisper, “I love you,”
He’s gone.
I miss you, Kenneth.
This has moved me to tears David...you write so beautifully with such heart felt emotion...Perhaps he no longer feels the pain experienced in those terrible happenings within his life...
But I can't imagine how it must make you feel David to have your brother near, yet not have him how he was....
Sending love and peace to you David.. And to Kenneth....
So poignant and revealing. I hope they find the cause and the cure soon. I know you miss him very much.
While reading I was reminded of my grandmother. At her 85th birthday she was listening to three conversations at the same time and stepping in with her own take whenever she felt the need.
From then on until she died at 90, she became a smiling, eating machine, that left little behind her cataract covered eyes of her past witty intellect from reading all the books in several libraries.
My uncle said she had held out so long until it was right for her to die so that my father and another uncle could be at the funeral together and overcome the differences that separated them.
I pray God will give you continued comfort, patience and strength as you go through the loss of Alzheimer's with your dear brother. This is a sad, but meaningful tribute to him.
A wicked Cajun Fairy named Robes Pierre entered the impenetrable Magical doll land of Sha Bebe. Queen Faustina, the ruler of the doll land, thought she had destroyed him, but he's back! Will the doll land survive his evil ways?
The familiar lament of dual-career parents raising children is, "I just can't do it all." The Libra Solution provides an alternative - a more satisfying and sustainable work and life approach - to the overwrought modern day norm.
