My sister Margaret passed away on December 2, 2012. It's as though I have gone a lifetime of Christmases without her.
Christmases Without Margaret
My sister Margaret is gone.
And in the end, I will have spent
All my Christmases without her.
During her third year of being a teen,
She married and left our humble home.
I was the tender age of five—
Too young to recollect any of the details.
In essence, it's as if those five years did not exist,
Since they are indeed absent from my memory
And so the mighty gates to my early past
Are bolted shut—never to be released again.
Soon after marriage, the words "with child" were born,
So that by the time Margaret was twenty-three,
She was the devoted mother of five,
The mother of children with whom she would
Celebrate all her remaining Christmases,
In a small village just down the snow-covered lane
From the place I now call home.
Heart rending words David..it is obvious you shared a very deep loving bond with Margaret...I empathise strongly with your loss, but I truly believe she is on another wonderful journey now, and is checking in on you whenever she wishes to...whichI'm sure is very often...
I hope this is a very Happy New Year for you and yours...
Warm wishes, Diana...
I can truly relate. My only sister was 12 years older than me and we were apart most of our lives. I'm so sorry for your loss and this is a very wonderful slice of life poem.
Missed reading you here. I still have all of my siblings, but my twin brother's wife died quickly in a fall last March. He is celebrating with her large family this holiday season, too far away from the rest of us… down the lane for us to all get together many years now.
Let this coming of age story of a boy named Bean take you back to a simple time. Set in a small southern town in the 1960's, encircled by a river and gleaming white cotton fields.
