Tough Love

Nearly eighty years ago my brother Kenneth and a boy named Bobby went skating on the thin ice of a deep pond. My mother reacted in a strange sort of way.

Tough Love

Kenneth skated on a deep winter's pond

With a boy named Bobby Fraley.

And in his excitement to tell Mother,

Words slid from his tongue how the ice

Popped and cracked while they played.

Mother's heart quickened and hardened

As she downed his little britches

To halfway thrash him to death,

Before holding him to her bosom

For what seemed like the rest of winter.

I do understand your Mothers reaction David...overwhelming fear of what could have happened...and overwhelming love and thanks that it didn't...
The way you portray the story is perfect...and the last two lines really clinch it!
Perfect.....

David,

A Mother's love knows no bounds. I doubt your brother went back to that pond again.:)

Blessings,
Linda

She was a good mother, trying to protect her son. I know someone whose son died the way your brother could have. Thanks for sharing this slice of life poem, David.

Nothing strange about your mother's reaction! I can feel the belated panic she felt at his story, all dealt with in one quick paddling, sealed with her fierce mother-love. You, my friend, had a wonderful mother!

As I read I was afraid they would fall in and can understand this moms reaction. Fear first and then overpowering love. I remember my son running in the street when he was 4 after I told him to stand right by my side as I got something out of the car. I heard a car horn and screech of brakes and my heart froze. For one second I couldn't move and then I ran to get him. He was frightened and I took him off the street and patted his backside just once with the words that he best never do that again. He is much older now and still remembers that one time I "spanked" him. Amazing how one pat on a butt works wonders for the memory.

You have a way of telling a story with the poem that is very touching. I can feel your mother's concern.

MY MOM BELIEVED IN PHYSICAL REPREMANDING. IT WAS A LONG TIME BEFORE I GREW TO APPRECIATE IT AND REALIZE THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ENDURE AND BE THE WOMAN I AM TODAY WITHOUT IT. GOD AND MOM - LOVED ME. I DON'T CALL IT TOUGH LOVE THOUGH, I CALL IT RIGHT LOVE. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
