On Death

We don't worry about birth because that already happened. We worry about death because it involves the unknown. Birth and Death have to be related and this poem explores that idea. I also think the body gets confused with essence. This comes from my book on poetry: "Acorns of Love and Wisdom, Poem for the Every Day Person".

ON DEATH AND FUNERALS

As you scan these lines
My ghost remains
Among this scrawl
That auto-eulogizes
Across this page

Social convention
Has blurred your vision
With tearful thoughts
Of death

Yet this transcendental
Metamorphosis
Is not food
That can nourish
Thoughts
Among the living

Dine with your eyes
Once again--if you must
On the casing
That housed my essence

But let the mirror
That forms your thoughts
Reflect on the spark
Called by my name

By now
I'm sure I am as I was
Before I was
A babe

Speaking as someone who works with the bereaved, Steve, this poem was brilliant!

LOVED this:

Dine with your eyes
Once again--if you must
On the casing
That housed my essence

But let the mirror
That forms your thoughts
Reflect on the spark
Called by my name
