A Dog’s Life

Hey, what’s that?
Is it? Is it?
I hear something.
I hear it, I bet it’s him, I hope it’s him.
I smell him!
It is! It is!
Oh wow!- He’s here!-
I can’t believe it!- He’s the coolest!
I can’t help myself!-
Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark!.
Wow wow!- Hi, you’re here!
I can’t believe you’re finally here!
I’ve been waiting all day for you!
Look at me run, run around in circles-
So fast!
Can you believe I’m this fast?
Can we play please?
You throw the stick so far!-
I’ll get it back so quick you won’t believe it!
Can we play? Can we play?

Dumb stupid dog.
Stupid animal-
“Down down down,
Go lie down!”
I can’t believe this every freaking day.
What’s the big deal?
“Calm down!”
I can’t even take my coat off.
I better let her out to pee.

Is he? Is he?
He is! He is!
He’s going to the back door!
Can we play?
We’ll have more fun than you can believe!
We will! We will!

“Get out, go go.”

Oh wow! Oh wow!
Smell that air!
This is the best!
Look at me run!
Can you believe this speed!
Can you believe it?
Twice around this big yard
And you hardly blinked your eyes!
Twice already!
This feels so good!
Throw the stick!
I’ll get it back so fast for you-
So fast you won’t believe it!
I’ll amaze you I promise!
Promise promise promise…
I’ll…
?
Where is he?
Where is he?
The door’s closed.
Both doors are closed.
Where is he?
Where is he?
Where is he?
Where is he?

Loved this poem, made me laugh, it is so true, I think it can be the same with children too. God bless. Baz

John, I've been enjoying reading a few of your poems, too tired to comment---until I read this one! How could you know our Sugarplum so well? This should have been written about her. Such an energetic dog, I didn't know there was another one like her. (See "The Flight of The Four-Legged Friz Whiz") My Bill is not a poetry-lover, but I read part of this to him and he really laughed as he recognized a kindred soul in you, right down to the almost-cuss word.
Some people might think you've exaggerated; I believe every word.
Sugarplum is helping to keep us young.
Woof! Connie

I knew animals such as what you describe as a child. Thank you for the reminder, John. Love and peace to you,

Does that really happen with other doggies, my dad never treats me like that, first we play then we go out for a walk TOGETHER then we play on the way home...Rufuz (woof)
