Pretty woman, thirty-seven, daughter in her arms.
Stopped her car along the bridge, such silence – no alarms,
Least none that anybody heard along the sorry way,
A haunting question lingers as I watch them drag the bay.
Who teaches us to listen to what matters in our lives?
Is all this business necessary? Buzzing to our hives
Like what is so important is the job we have to do.
We’ve separated, making cracks, and some are slipping through.
Looking back as people do they start to see some signs,
But no one thought before today to read between the lines.
We’ve all got troubles, none to blame for minding just their own,
But maybe that’s the trouble, that we’re going it alone.
So maybe make a call or two, remember, keep in touch.
You might not think it matters when it matters very much.
And listen; ever listen for the cries that go unheard.
There will not be a single crack if all our hearts are stirred.
Oh John this is marvelous. And such a much need lesson. Silent screams come from the most tortured hearts. And loneliness kills. I know, I once stood on a bridge, alone with my son in my arms. 36 years have passed since that night.
