TWO FACES

By John Herlihy

Magic is make-believe,
Turning reality awry,
A fabric of multi-colored weave,
Convincing by being sly.

Lying has a twisted tongue,
Giving evidence when there is none,
Pretending to be a pun.
In the end, lies fool no one.

Hypocrisy wears two faces,
Coated notoriously black and white.
The one has genuine traces;
The other only shadowed light.

Everything has a dark side,
Giving evidence of life’s gloom.
The trust of darkness is to hide,
Giving definition to life’s loom.

right, any fabric has its face and back; the loom of life merely doesn’t operate otherwise by definition. A mature piece of a serious poetry we witness here. Lots thanks, John. Cheers, alex

We all lie. Without lying we would be in constant conflict, so we tend to lie just to make our life easier. Sometimes though, lies become serious, even leading to suicide or other drastic acts.

Nobody likes a hypocrite except another politician. ;-)

Love that third verse, John, you flat-out nailed it!

Most liars have two faces, we just need to identify the one face that when they tell the truth. If that face never surfaces, that means the person is a habitual liar. Good thought-provoking write!

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
