We are held in thrall by fictions and dreams,
Filled with white cotton till bursting at the seams.
The evolving spirit floats on the river’s flow,
Wishing to make landfall to hide under the hedgerow,
Eyes fixed wide with awe and terror and lust,
Until our hearts fill with fear and wonder ready to bust,
Into a sea of impermanence always changing, never the same,
The deceit and lies end up bursting into flame,
We are searching like children with our heads in the dust,
Building houses with palm fronds smelling of pungent musk.
We live the fiction that we will live on earth forever;
We experience the world as a dream that will soon become never.
Shine like a searchlight on the rocky promontory of the shore,
Awaken to the light that illuminates vast oceans as never before.
Shadows are perishable things that disappear in the harshness of light,
So also fictions and dreams fade away into the darkness of the night.
