Just Counting
By John Herlihy
The number one,
A unique sum,
No matter how much we count to infinity,
It always amounts to One.
The number two,
On our knees in a pew,
Whether friend, foe, lover or guide,
There is always someone on the other side.
The number three,
The communal we,
Think the brave Musketeers or the holy Trinity,
Father, son and Holy Spirit make up the signature we.
The number four,
Through the earth door,
Speak forth love, compassion, harmony, and peace,
Words change the world and their bounties never cease.
The number five,
Children in a hive,
Infancy, childhood, sweet innocence at play,
This is one land in which we cannot stay.
The number six,
Bright candles with burning wicks,
Drops of hot wax falling like tears to the ground,
Our lives peeling away like flower petals drifting down.
The number seven,
Sacred and profound,
The seven deadly sins stand proudly on display,
Their counterparts fortell we are heaven-bound.
