The Wrong Life
By John Herlihy

When surrounded by hardship and strife,
He felt he had strayed into the wrong life.
What raises this fear ringing as an alarm bell?
Cowardice buried deep within some inner well.
He could endure being sick or lost on the way;
But other things materialized to have their say.
Treachery would often raise its monster head,
Unmasking the ugly face of a fiend well-fed.
Betrayal stung with the cold slap of a whip,
Drawing bitter gall with poison captured in a sip.

Deceits bestowed upon him that he didn’t deserve,
Hadn’t he always held himself completely in reserve?
If people could lie so genially across the table,
Of what other deceptions might they be capable?
Rejection crassly broke down the walls of his heart,
Leaving him lonely, on his own and worlds apart.
Hatred cut him open and laid him bare,
Thrown off and laying on the ground, just anywhere.
He had no strength against the power of indifference,
Making him feel cheap, not worth much of a pittance.

These things should happen to anyone but him,
The wrong life just feels like another person’s whim.

For certain there are many wronged in life, but I suppose it takes tremendous courage to rise above it and not dwell on injustices. Easier said than done, but I think many of us pick and choose our own attitudes in the midst of fallout.

As always, you analyze a human condition with eloquence and wisdom.

I CAN'T RELATE TO 'WRONG LIFE'. I MAY NOT BE 'GIDDY' WITH THE LIFE I HAVE BUT I KNOW THAT GOD IS IN CHARGE AND THUS, THIS IS THE BEST LIFE FOR ME. IN SPITE OF ALL THAT I GO THROUGH; UPS, DOWNS, PAINS, CONFUSION, TEARS, SPURTS OF HAPPINESS HERE AND THERE - IN THE END, IT WILL ALL SERVE GOD'S ULTIMATE PURPOSE...THAT I REACH MY HEAVENLY HOME. I DON'T ALWAYS UNDERSTAND IT BUT I EMBRACE IT, AS GOD AND HIS LOVE EMBRACES AND STRENGTHENS ME. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Cowardice, treachery, betrayal, deceits, and rejection are going on on Capitol Hill right now.

Seriously though, this fellow is sure having one horrible day! I found myself feeling so sorry for him as I felt as though I was by his side experiencing his demise. I found myself thinking that this guy needs some help. Realistic writing!!!

Love ya!

I have, of course John, been there, done that. Nothing to brag about except for the fact I have found a way to forgive those who I needed to forgive. The rest? Hanging back in the corner of my brain where the light never shines.

Unfortunately, so many feel they have been born into the "wrong life." As a result, there is much turmoil churning right below the surface that often erupts in the wrong way.

Great character study.

a very interesting attempt to look into what is hidden behind our everyday good looks. In modern society where the ritual is mostly forgotten, there is a lack of absorbing padding between the light and dark sides of our life; hence some confusing deadlocks we set our foreheads against. . . as is said, one man's meat is another man's poison. Another question which is put here is the level of readiness of taking the so-called 'wrong life' (which is only another side of what is right) as one's destiny to get over it. . . in a word, you're digging deeply here, adhering your narrative manner, John. Cheers, alex
