What I want and what I need,
They seem to come from the same breed.
You hear the words the same thing to tell;
But in the end you see they don’t mix well.
Wanting speaks of desire somehow on offer;
Needing speaks of treasure hiding in a coffer.
Most of us want health, happiness and wealth,
That we aim to acquire by resorting to stealth.
Most of us are clueless as to what we really need;
If we knew, we may want less what we don’t need.
Wanting peeks from the heart like a rising sun;
Needing announces itself at the point of a gun.
Wanting an expendable desire from an inner core;
Needing seeks a soothing balm when feeling sore.
What about the futility of wanting what you do not need.
Thinking to have things that suggest the will to succeed.
Not the mention the danger of wanting the wrong thing,
Once you have it, you may realize the evil it can bring.
All I really want in life are the things that I truly need.
Why want a thing that will have us end up going to seed.
John, so much truth is this. It has made me stop and and think, what do I really need? We all acquire so much junk , I know I have. It is amazing we all work so hard all our life to acquire stuff and then as we get older, we start thinking to lighten the ship, simplify and get rid of two thirds of it!!!

I have never wanted for things that I didn't need nor been jealous of those that have so much and yet they are not happy It takes a beautiful sunny day, lovely flowers in a field, a smile, a small hello , and a hug to make me happy Good health is welcome too. If you have your health and someone that loves you, that is all you need to be happy.
This explains exactly what I ask myself many times, "Do I need this or do I just want it?" finding out that what I merely want I can live without. All I need are shelter, food, clothing (not the entire women's section of Macy's), and the writings of John Herlihy!!!
'If we knew, we may want less what we don’t need' because there is a huge (temporary) gap between what we think of the subject of our pursuit and what we finally get. To get exactly what you want to get is considered in the east as 'wu-wei' mistakenly translated in the west 'inaction.' Another meaningful piece of practical philosophy put in a form of the true poetry. Cheers, alex
You have covered the subject so well. The solution does not seem to be easily at hand because, for most, wanting is easily fulfilled by consumption. People don't realize what they need until they are deprived of it and learn exactly what is essential and what is not.
I try not to take more than I need because it just becomes excess baggage to carry around in my life.
Okay John, you have given us both sides of the "wanting" and "needing" coin. This poem speaks volumes and shines the light of truth to the reader in no uncertain terms. Excellent.
