The death of a season gives no accounting and no clear reason,
Why it awakens, flourishes and dies a death as if from treason.
Each of the seasons arrive without a word at the appointed time,
They express a unique quality derived from realms of the Sublime.
The enriching splendor of summer lies spread out across the plain,
Knowing from experience that soon nothing will remain the same.
Indian summer like an uninvited guest still wishing to impress,
Still fighting for its temporary possession of her green dress.
From the top of the mountain to the valley at the bottom,
She protects her greenery from the onslaught of autumn.
While losing it to the conflagration of reds, yellows and browns,
You would think the trees thrived in the land of echoing sounds.
Death comes in a blaze of colors in the kingdom of leaves,
Drifting to earth with a final wave as they take their leave.
The earth waits in hushed silence for the coming of the snow,
That will blanket every created thing and allow nothing to grow.
The hoarfrost will cover everything with its layers of icing;
Icicles will hang delicately from eaves like a finger enticing.
People here on earth mourn the death of a season but briefly,
Thankful for the range of seasons that enchant us so sweetly.
John,
Each season changes the ambiance and zest of natures plan.
It is sometimes hard to let one go and yet it drifts calmly
and serenely into another.
Beautiful writing!
An enchanting look at seasons. Our ecosystem that we poetically call nature is incredibly wondrous and productive in spite of the extremes that our rocky planet provides. It is so fortunate that the oceans moderate much of this contrast, allowing life to flow from its relatively benign waters to extremes of temperature and pressure, in some cases, like you describe gently, drastic shifts in climate.
It certainly is magic to see the difference between the busy plenty of midsummer and the stark and dead look of midwinter and wonder how they can always continue to happen in the same year. Magic by any other means than scientific reality.
Well done, Sir John. I don't have the words to do justice to this wonderful poem. It flowed so naturally from line to line. Each line pushing us quietly into the next season. And yes! Even though I protest and grumble I, too, am "Thankful for the range of seasons that enchant us so sweetly."
Such a lovely tribute! I enjoy the changing of the seasons with all each has to offer. Thank you!! I believe I will be able to finally enjoy the outdoors more now since my surgery. This poem was like an appetizer!!
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
