The Unwritten Law
By John Herlihy

Humanity is bound together
By the holiness of an unwritten law.
Through hell and rough weather,
We follow a code that we never saw.
Bound together firmly by a tight weave;
Held together safely by what we believe.
The law reflects a collective responsibility
Of camaraderie and enduring kindness
That transcends the spirit of selfishness.
The code is Biblical in its depth,
Quranic in the extent of its breadth.
Protected by the heritage of centuries,
Its meaning veiled from its enemies.

Even wild animals abide by certain codes;
Poetry speaks of a universal law in odes.
And what is this unwritten law of which we write?
The words found engraved in cuneiform script
On a stone slab in the form of an index finger;
Now understood to be Hammurabi’s Code.
Everyone knew what was of them required;
The written and codified law dully inspired,
The ancient tribes of Hittites and Assyrians,
From the Near East unto the land of Babylon.

To reach out and extend a helping hand
To friends, to partners, to the likes of strangers,
To a child dressed in swaddling clothes in a manger.
A person may depend upon the hand of a rival,
Reaching out and offered to ensure his survival.
This is the unwritten law of the land
That for centuries has given humanity
The strength the world’s turmoil to withstand.
The mystery of endurance of the universal law;
Encoded in a fingerprint down to the cat’s paw.

If only the universal law wasn't twisted out of proportion by their interpretation of guiding principles so they are no longer humane.

A beautiful and wise poem John, all humanity is bound together, in more ways than most of us will ever realize. What increases one increases all, what diminishes one diminishes all. Much enjoyed.

Mankind has both a good and dark side, and we need both to survive. but it's our dark side that we must conquer, or it will consume us.
Enjoyed this interesting write.

a very interesting piece, from its top to bottom. The index finger correlates with the spleen, the central organ (Earth), around which all the other five survive. Hammurabi’s collection of laws was perfectly built-up; hence the Babylon's eventual collapse. As for the tribes in the territory of modern China, they were gathered together under the leadership of great ancestors (among others the Yellow Emperor, for example) who put the written code on the base of the human body's construction. Thus, the joint point of consolidation was the Lao-gong acupoint in the middle of palm. You have to fist your hand if you want to feel it. so, the written code was associated with the open palm while the unwritten code with a fist. The Chinese civilization, not like the Babylon's, is still in existence. Now we can ponder of the unwritten law, sir. Cheers, alex

As far as I am concerned, commonsense is in most areas of our lives...

Why so much has been written and adjudicated based on these ancient principles and something I find rather strange, precedent, I see a time when we will leave childhood behind, stop following blind principles rather than using logical thinking, and finally be fair to everyone. (The Golden Rule)

Whatever, and however one believes, there is one thing paramount, i.e., that the believers seek goodness within their prayers. Yes, we have some who seek death and destruction, and is a formidable enemy as we are seeing manifesting itself daily these days. But the good will prevail . . .

We each are taught to live by these laws and fortunately most do. There will always be the ones that will not but we outnumber the few.
