A Happy Ending
By John Herlihy

Nobody wants to think
That this is all there is.
Just break me a leg
And wish me all the luck,
As they say in show biz.

Surely, there’s something more
Than what’s in my little store,
Gathered through the years,
With blood, sweat and tears,
Just to be cast away on the shore.

No, I want what is promised
In all the holy books on the shelf.
Life’s lies just pretend to be honest.
I am not an imp or an elf,
But a human being nurtured on stealth.

I will give everything away,
Just to finally have my say.
I don’t consider myself a dope,
With no intention of giving up hope,
Like a child, at night, I kneel down and pray.

Every book has its own ending,
Giving everybody what they want.
Otherwise, it becomes a tragedy,
A story in which everyone dies,
No matter how hard everyone tries.

Happy endings are for fairy tales
In which the villain endlessly regales.
In real life, few of us get what we want
Our tragedies happen only to taunt,
Leaving behind scars to cover old wounds.

The fairie in me lives in a world where everything has a happy ending in one way or another. "I'll be back!"!!! Remember, I saw the "bubbles".

Love ya!

I love the direct delivery in this poem with every line so clearly understood. And, it is a profound inspection of the paradox of life. I hadn't even thought of the fact that every life is a tragedy because we die. I guess that's why so many want to cling to the strange idea that there is some kind of afterlife.

I guess my life has been too good, too filled with adventure, love, learning and experience for me to be worried about what I didn't do and will never get done because death is approaching. Frankly, I'm right at the point where I could go today and not worry about it… Not give a damn. I've done all I want to do in this life and I'm happy for what I did.

each and every scar makes our skin stronger every time, till the state of its bulletproof condition. That's a good news. The bad news is that each time we lose something from within, our soul, becoming tougher and therefore closer to the end. As the ancient Classic says, ' All plants, in their early growth, are soft and gentle, / But at their death withered and dry. / So, it is that stiffness and strength are the attendants of death, / But softness and weakness are the concomitants of life.' There is no happy ending by definition because all happiness starts to become just after that to last till the middle of the coiled course. Enjoyed this poem a lot. Cheers, alex

If at first we don't succeed we're taught to try, try again ... so it is hardly surprising that we want just one more ride on the merry-go-round. But most of us, I think, are just terrified to get off and become part of the 'vast unknown' ... good job.

I am sure you have noticed, through my feeble attempts at poetry, John, my thoughts on reincarnation. I am a believer . . . Nice work, as always.

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
