What We Leave Behind
By John Herlihy

The only thing that truly matters
. . . Lies in what we finally leave behind.
History preserves lovingly in museums,
. . . Valued treasures that we set out to find.
The halls of central governments will fall;
. . . Whole continents will move on tectonic plates.
But the human story is always measured,
. . . By the rise and fall of individual human fates.
Worlds will collide and drift apart in outer space;
. . . Universes will be born for an aspiring human race.
We await the arrival of the future holding fast,
. . . Because of the promise that lies in its wings.
But every future has elements of the past;
. . . The legacy of the past is what sweetly sings.

Mounted black horses pass on padded hooves,
. . . Thru the valley of deeds and accomplishment.
Silent footsteps that make no raucous fanfare,
. . . Only the quiet fluttering of banners in the air.
Two sentinels stand ready at the day’s drawn gates,
. . . To note those who pass as each surveys and waits.
Multitudes make way across the valley in good faith;
. . . Many earned their keep using with skill the lathe.
Noble intentions hold firmly their protective spear;
. . . The fulfillment of noble deeds takes up the rear.
Beyond the valley opens clear to horizon’s edge,
. . . Emerging light in the distance beckons as a pledge.
This world that we live in is for those who dare,
. . . Leave something behind that only you can share.

I THINK EVENTUALLY WE ALL LEAVE SOMETHING BEHIND THAT IS 'UNIQUE'. NO TWO PEOPLE ARE EXACTLY ALIKE EVEN THOUGH THEY MIGHT STRONGLY RESEMBLE ONE ANOTHER IN HABITS, THOUGHTS OR OTHERWISE. SO, WHATEVER IT IS THAT ONE LEAVES BEHIND(GRAND OR MINUTE)OF THEMSELVES, WHETHER GOOD OR BAD, IT IS 'ORIGINAL' AND... MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Yes, we should all "leave something behind that only you can share."
That is the secret of immortality.

I have fought through the mean streets. Came out of it with a mentally crippled attitude I'd say . . . If I had a choice of what those who knew me to remember me by both the idiot fighter who blended into a man who had come to grips with both worlds. The street smart guy and the mellow fellow who managed to leave both worlds taking with him what he needed too understand the next world he was thrust into . . . fighter still, if it comes to that

Certainly does give one thought. As destructive as we are as a warring breed so bent on destroying the old to bring up our new, it's a wonder that anything of any value from history still exists.

Marketers are always at my door telling me they want to make me into a "brand." A brand is a fleeting way to make money, but isn't something that I would want on my Wikipedia page a thousand years from now? Maybe yes, maybe no. Just one poem that survives down through the ages will do.

Except for a select few, what we leave behind will soon be discarded and forgotten. That's just life Generations come and go, and time marches on.
