Remember innocence and its sense of holy splendor;
When it first saw the light of day as an infant, tender.
Remember the sweet bud when the world feels right;
Nature’s innocence assumes a color whiter than white.
The bud of innocence never fully extended into bloom.
Betrayed and despoiled, greeted by its own lethal doom;
Even if it does awaken, it is limited by the force of the hour.
Ticking seconds away until death closes down the flower.
The loss of innocence pays the price of human suffering;
Corruption takes its place at the price of truth suffocating.
When man or woman takes over from the innocent child;
Everything they touch becomes in some manner defiled.
Innocence disappears into the mist like a restless child;
Shadows gather, light fades, the pond waters seem mild.
When snow begins to descend on this side of midnight,
We remember our innocence and its offering of light.
Now innocence lies hidden in the rain showers of Spring;
Crocuses emerge from the ground for their brief little fling.
The perfume of innocence still lingers in a child’s smile;
The whisper of innocence still echoes in the wind’s wild.
A little innocence sometimes falls down an inside hole,
To take root deep within the hallowed ground of our soul.
If our sins cast elongated shadows in silhouette to light,
Our innocence burrows deep within the silence of the night.
Shining as a courageous knight of the illustrious golden age,
Held in portraiture as a damsel in distress to history’s page.
Innocence, our fallen angel, where have you gone on earth?
We have lost our feathered wings at the arrival of our birth.
Oh sweet scent of the emerging rose now corrupted black,
Stuffed in memoriam as a captured thief in life’s dusty sack.
Sweet innocence, never forgotten, a butterfly with wings,
Holy innocence, always remembered, a bird that sings.
Innocence is never truly lost; it simply waits to be found;
Somehow our innocence has lost its way and run aground.
The loss of innocence a price we pay with no clear reckoning.
Listen to the call of innocence and you will hear it beckoning.
What a great write, John, rhymed excellently & well written and thought out...with regards innocence though, I lost mine a long way back, never to be found again, I'm afraid...-e-
That was quite a rundown on innocence. Innocence lost. One thing that I am quite proud of is that I have never, really lost my innocence. Some would say that I am naïve. But that's okay because being naïve and open is the essence of innocence.
As JMS Bell said, once innocence is lost you can never get it back. You can pretend to have it, but it is lost forever. However, you say, "Innocence is never truly lost; it simply waits to be found;" I cannot agree with that, it is impossible to "find" innocence, once it is lost.
I love your tender poems. Maybe it's because I've known too many men who either lacked it or they have buried it deep as a social requirement. But you prove that you all are still with us in the occasional movie, book, or in poems like this. Very nicely done.

WELL DONE, JOHN...EXCEPT, 'INNOCENCE' IS NEVER REALLY FOUND AGAIN ONCE IT'S TAKEN. ONE MAY FIGHT TO GET IT BACK, IF THEY WERE EVEN AWARE WHEN IT WAS TAKEN, BUT ONE 'NEVER' RETRIEVES IT... AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING. THANK GOD FOR HIS LOVE THAT MAKES UP FOR 'EVERY' LOST - PAST AND PRESENT, OVER AND OVER AGAIN, 'CAUSE...HE WHISPERS, 'I LOVE YOU'. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
Ah, but I do dear John, that is why I do puppet shows. It's my form of therapy. If you are interested in having a peek the last one I did was Little Red Riding hood. Here is a link to my puppet show if you would like to see it, thank you for awakening me each morning with your refreshing poetry. It's both truthful and good. xo

WHISPERS OF THE HEART is artist and author J. Allen Wilson's second book of poetry.It can be autographed and shipped within 48 hours of order. NO LONGER AVAILABLE.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
Love ya!
