When
By John Herlihy

When is darkness so dark,
it no longer has color to keep.
When is sorrow so sad,
it no longer allows us to weep.
When is silence so profound,
it no longer has a hint of sound.
When is failure so lost,
it can no longer bear the cost.
When it emptiness so hollow,
it no longer induces any sorrow.
When is despair so enveloping,
it no longer bears contemplating.

When is goodness so pure,
it paints white into pastoral snow.
When is our virtue so sure,
it surpasses everything we know.
When is living so fanciful,
it fills each lonely hour.
When is giving so bountiful,
it bestows magical power.
When is dying so difficult,
we question what’s left to save.
When is death so final,
it takes us beyond the grave.

When do we find that moment,
that unveils the sense of eternity.
When do we come upon the secret,
that finally opens the eye of certainty.

You've written a poem to ponder infinity. Amazing. Infinity will always be beyond our grasp and understanding since we are not the ones who created this world. Not everyone believes in God, but I do. I don't usually write about religion, but we need a belief system in place to even believe that infinity exists. If not, who created it? Someone who wants us to keep reaching for the unreachable star.

I for one have always argued: what you believe is true." Of course, there is much to argue here, and being able to explain the maxim is usually difficult when conversing with another philosopher. But, I believe firmly that the idea of "truth" is so personal and can mean both objective truth and subjective truth that it deserves much debate. Your poem here allows the reader to contemplate his or her own truths and feel enlightened by your perspective, even if it takes some considerable thinking to accept some of your truths as mine. You have, however, offered a challenging poetic meditation I truly appreciate.

Lots of unanswered questions seeking the timeline to the future that will probably never be revealed.

Although I don't agree the ending will bring a sudden change in the state of affairs, you have your right to dream for it even if it isn't true.

When composition such as this graces a page of art we know we have made the right stop.
