At sunset, sparrows do chirp and chatter,
Frantically, as if their utterances matter.
You never see them as they come and go,
A tree blazing sound as you stand below.
Imagine that nature creates such gaggle,
Like farmers in the bazaar as they haggle.
One wonders what all the fuss is about,
The sound a chaotic quality as in a rout.
True the twilight creates an eerie flavor,
Night’s arrival hardly an event to savor.
The anxious birds protest passing time,
Discord arises as their voices intertwine.
They wish to herald the coming day’s end,
Soft voices fall asleep in dreams to blend.
Sparrows certainly are ubiquitous almost the world over. We have them in our birdfeeder every day and I just saw some fighting in the apricot tree like children over nothing. We do get a few other birds, but the sparrows dominate and become a target for various raptors that come through following the highline power cable where they can sit very high and watch for prey.

Such a lovely poem to start my day! I live in the country (aka The Boonies) so I am fortunate enough to hear the calls and songs of sparrows and other birds. Your poem represents my experiences beautifully.

Ahhh . . . The chattering of the sparrows heralding the end of the day and the beginning of the approaching night. As a child I loved to listen to the sound.
I wonder, do birds dream? Every night, just at sunset, a lone cardinal visits our bird feeder, and as he dines, he chirps away. I'd like to imagine he's saying thank you.
