Summer storms have no heart, only soul,
Firmly felt in the message they have told.
If they begin at all, you can surely find them,
In the peace of silence inner sound to blend.
A silence, a hush, a calm before the storm,
A breath of fear or delight to be the norm.
Felt in the dark premonition of wild clouds,
There on the horizon as blackened shrouds.
The sun blocked out with darkened fingers,
Shamefully ignored as the darkness lingers.
Storms gather as a herd of horses spooked,
Blowing thru tunnels of wind, a thief with loot.
Horses hooves start up as the faintest rumble,
The dust and soot of the land stir all a-tumble.
Soon a thousand voices couldn’t even compare,
To the growing turmoil of the wild wind in the air.
As I said, the storm leaves its heart far behind,
As it unleashes its harsh forces of another kind.
The thunder, the lightning, the wind inspire fears,
Thunder for its rumbling sound with light spears.
The blackened foil of clouds let loose its wrath,
Biblical flood waters left behind in the aftermath.
We feel the heartless terror the storm unleashes,
Storm emotion into our tender heart breeches.
Outer storms match the storms we hold within,
Our blackened feelings we experience as grim.
The heartless storm does in fact have its soul,
As the experience of humanity makes us whole.
The misery, revenge, remorse we cannot ignore,
With patience and hope we do the Divinity implore.
In understanding both our outer and inner storms,
We value the heartless storm as it comes to warn.
I ENJOYED YOUR METAPHORIC PICTURE OF A STORM AND CERTAINLY I CAN RELATE TO IT BUT LOOKING AT IT FROM A TANGIBLE ASPECT; I WAS BORN IN NEW YORK CITY, MY PARENTS WERE FROM THE SOUTH AND I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEND A COUPLE OF SUMMERS THERE ON A FARM. WHENEVER A STORM AROSE WITH ITS WIND, RAIN AND FLASHING LIGHTENING, WE COVERED ALL THE MIRRORS AND SAT DOWN QUIETLY...GOD WAS TALKING. I LEARNED NOT TO BE AFRAID OF LIGHTENING FROM THAT EXPERIENCE. I GUESS THE STORM...GAVE ITS HEART AWAY...TO ME. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
You write of storms in such grim terms here. Storms blow dust from distant lands to fertilize. Storms provide abundant freshwater to the land and in so doing take the dust out of the air. The strong winds prune the trees of dead branches. And finally, and most importantly, lightning fuses nitrogen in the air with oxygen forming nitrous oxide and nitric acid, falling to the earth and fertilizing it. I agree that tornadoes and floods are devastating, but even floods provide new soil to the floodplains.
Storms. Some people relish the violence of storms, and I admit to being one of them. Living near the Gulf of Mexico I find myself anticipating them. I realize that is a strange way of looking at the violence of the storms, but living through them, and I have lived through many, gives me a sense of freedom. Storms. Nature gone berserk.
I certainly see spiritual subtext in this. Thankfully we can find peace in the storms that threaten us. I've learned (more often than not) that the storms that (at times) raged in my life didn't come to teach me a painful lesson, they come to wash me clean. Well written. Well received. Thanks. Peace... r
Storms have their purpose in or out. They clear the debris stir the emotions and draw us closer to our real selves. Though often destructive, they give us the opportunity of showing our real steel. I always enjoy your strong poems, "beat little heart beat" and keep writing, Hugs.
