I awaken in the morning with a foolish, reckless longing,
Thrilled in a world that freely extends its sense of belonging.
I brush away in contempt my constant companion, anxiety,
To go about my business with a profound sense of sobriety.
I bribe all my feelings of envy and spite into profound silence,
And await the kind visage of the new day in quiet compliance.
Still little anxieties disturb the day’s serenity lodged in my head,
There in nooks and crannies filling me with impending dread.
Many people go through life feeling on the outside looking in,
Wearing a cloak of receptivity, feeling uncomfortable in our skin.
I never paint the day drab to throw our rosy dreams in contrast,
That gather in the wake of our lives before vanishing in the past.
A far greater triumph meets day’s end in peaceful contentment,
Bewitched by rigors of life’s passing with no feeling of resentment.
Our thoughts run thru our minds recklessly in habitual succession,
With no pretense of turning into anything but compulsive obsession.
Indeed, time itself seems to be made scanty in the rush of hours,
What little is left over will surely tax all of our diminishing powers.
I still suffer a tentative shyness that I wear like a winter cloak,
While inward criticism of all and sundry emerges from areas remote.
Tomorrow, I hope to replenish my life with music in a major key,
And extinguish all the anxiety and depression of life’s minor key.
I will awaken again tomorrow with a foolish, reckless longing,
And thank God’s judgement in giving me a sense of belonging.
A sad note (minor) ending up on a happier (major) note! There are times I fall into a depressive condition and then I think about the things I am grateful with starting with life itself. Great reading, John!
Your word choices make this work quite memorable.

We fall into these feelings, these anxieties from time to time. I have no idea how I have dealt with it, but then life goes on, and I let other stuff occupy my mind. We wake up every morning and found that God has just granted us another day to use as we please. It would be a waste to feel the negative energy.
I can so relate to the sentiments and meanings shared through your verses here, John. As I get older, I realize how little I know and I feel "on the edge" often. But "on the edge" of what... ...I do not have a clue. I know I fall in love a bit too easily. Lol!!! Love and peace to you,
WE ARE ALL SO DIFFERENT, SHAPED & MOLD BY OUR EXPERIENCES...FROM THE WOMB TO THE GRAVE. TO 'BELONG' MEANS SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO ALL OF US. SO, I GUESS, THE VERY MOST THAT EACH CAN HOPE FOR AND FEEL VERY BLESSED IN ACHIEVING IS TO REACH 'THAT PLACE'(EMOTIONALLY, PHYSICALLY & SPIRITUALLY) WHERE OUR SENSE OF BELONGING IS 'MET' AND TO REST CONTENT THERE. FOR ME...I KNOW I BELONG TO JESUS...I AM HIS, HE IS MINE. HE LEADS ME, THUS, WHEREVER I AM 'STATIONED', THAT IS WHERE HE WANTS ME TO BE AT THAT TIME...AND I BELONG THERE. IN A NUTSHELL; THE FULFILLMENT OF MY SENSE OF BELONGING BEGINS AND ENDS WITH THE PRESENCE OF GOD. ENJOYED THIS PROVOKER OF THOUGHTS, JOHN, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
We are social creatures, even though it's nice to be alone. In this poem you recite them anyways that your encounters with other are viewed either from your perspective or theirs. As usual your richness of words is incredible.
Hah! Love that photo. I respond to this indepth poem with each and every line, except maybe the last one. As always you cover your subject with great rhyming lines.
This book represents a thirty-day period of my poetry journal. Each poem addresses
the dominant thoughts occupying my mind during the early morning hours of a given
day.

Questions, unquestioned discoveries, and answers in parable and rhyme…. This collection records a journey starting with a 1960s retrospective and the first man on the moon, moving to a new millennium welcomed in with a terrorist spin, family crises,
