We Are But Thieves By John Herlihy Time makes of us but thieves, As we steal away the hours. We laugh as our thievery grieves, With the waning of our powers. No longer young and getting old, Poorer with each passing date. We have all our virtues sold, We cannot afford to be late. We know well that time goes by, Relentless minutes and hours. We cannot ask the reason why, Only sit there alone in lofty towers. And watch below the closing gate, I now know how to patiently wait.

Figuring none of us really know when it is our turn to "break on through to the other side", I just keep doing what needs to be done as well as I am able. Thought provoking poem for sure, hon!!

I like this poem a lot,
and can truly relate,
but unlike your last line,
I've never learned how to patiently wait.
...And time marches on.

I will live to a hundred
I insist.
It's because I still have
a lot of things I need to do.

And if I can't finish all my work
when I'm a hundred
I will live past that,
I insist.
