Such a Simple Thing
By John Herlihy
My heart was once an open door.
Why do I now lay alone on the floor?
My love was such a simple thing,
Thru your door I did my heart bring.
When for you I gave myself away,
I fully expected you to linger, to stay.
Was that something too much to ask?
Did you see love as an annoying task?
That open door became a gaping hole,
When you smiled and my heart stole.
Little did I know you didn’t really care,
With no intention my feelings to spare.
As soon as the going got a little rough,
Our squabbles made love a little tough.
I thought our true love could conquer all,
Old age would meet us still in thrall.
To walk hand in hand into the sunset,
Knowing that we loved with no regret.
Never did I image my love as a myth,
The loved one as a stranger to be with.
My love was once such a simple thing,
When I flew, you were my other wing.
You once stole my heart beyond repair;
I keep my love and leave you the despair.
Love ya!

Everybody just live for themselves, I guess. I'm not much better.
Great poem!

young we are so full of idea as we grow old we realize that the greatest gift of all is being loved indiscriminately heart and soul. So rarely does it happen that when it does and one dies, the bird is maimed. Sigh... Your poetry makes me feel. Have a good day dear John. Hugs.
