HE ONLY CRIED FOR OTHERS

He only cried for others,

He never cried for himself.

The emotions welled within him,

They overtook him by stealth.

He wished to pick up their spirits,

Whisper tidings for good health.

He couldn’t abide a sorrowful visage,

His sympathy was part of his wealth.

- - - - - - - - - -

When children cried, he felt bereft.

The sounds of their sorrow rang in his ears.

Their happiness gone as if by theft,

Their watery eyes freely splashed tears.

Childhood sorrow has considerable heft,

How he wished he could lessen their fears.

When a child is sad, the whole world knows;

He whispered in their ears to forget their sorrows.

- - - - - - - - - -

He had a passion for reading novels.

Since childhood, a lifetime habit over the years.

The death scenes described in Dickens novels

Induced in him a flood of tears.

Nothing could stop the overflow of emotion,

Universal suffering the writer has made real.

He read the story with intense devotion,

What lay on the page he could deeply feel.

- - - - - - - - - -

He only cried for others,

He never cried for himself.

The emotions veiled in him as wealth,

Unreachable except through stealth.

Who can say how this door was locked;

But locked it was, never to open.

A door upon which he never knocked,

Forever closed, his heart was never broken.

I DISAGREE. I THINK BECAUSE SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW HE 'HAD' EXPERIENCED A BROKEN HEART IS THE VERY REASON HE WAS ABLE TO RELATE SO ENDEARINGLY TO ANOTHER'S SUFFERING. SO THEN, HIS TEARS WERE NOT JUST FOR THEM BUT FOR HIMSELF, AS WELL. THANKS FOR SHARING, JOHN. LOVE BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I wish I had written this, but I didn't so I will bestow my thoughts to the one who "stole" my poem. She knows I’m kidding . . . At least I hope she knows. This was especially a wonderful piece of prose, Sandie. I take my hat off and bow to you. This is a special piece of writing.

Somehow I feel like this poem is somewhat autobiographical. I know that I don't shed tears easily especially for others who I do not know. I seem to accept death in the family is just part of life. Especially those who have suffered greatly in old age and deserve peace that I don't mourn for but gladly accept.

This poem struck me hard, John.......in a good way. His unbroken heart is his armor. Your words, the story that jumps off the screen......so very touching.

Love ya!

I weep for others often; especially in prayer. So does my wife. Never having endured a broken heart, though, (in this world) seems inconceivable to me. I can imagine someone who'd been grievously wounded (emotionally or mentally) being withdrawn, hardened, and reticent to engage in open intercourse with others. Perhaps an unresolved fear of being rejected again. Stirring thoughts. r

How sad the plight of a heart that was never broken, how beautiful the gift of a sympathetic soul. I enjoyed your tender words this morning and the sweet photo is most endearing. Have a great day John,
all the best.

Great poem about caring for others! I believe many people who have empathy for others would cry for others, and try to comfort others who may need comforting, but I'll have to say sometimes having too much empathy for others is not really a good thing. Just a few days ago I wasn't able to sleep worrying about someone else's well-being.

I am one of those people who have a lot of empathy for others. There was a time when I cried all night for a couple whom I thought no one was tending to them when the husbabd was sick and the wife was old and not able care for him. They were people whom I have not even met, only known from Facebook, and my husband thought I was crazy crying for them all night.

However, I would not be Sandie if I didn't have empathy.
