-- WHAT WE SEEK --
By John Herlihy
There is no end to what we seek,
Haunting shadows always and forever bleak.
To float up with the wind and the breeze,
To fall dying as autumn’s colored leaves.
Phantom ghosts of the mind do arise,
Tempting enticements do offer surprise.
Justice demands that we receive our recompense,
We simply ignore those things we did in offence.
Life’s mystery enticing in a blade of grass,
Hidden desires tempting as they steadily amass.
We feel outrage when all our dreams are gone,
We feel loss when all our endeavors go wrong.
Loyalty found in friendship now until the end,
Happiness in the heart that we cannot pretend.
An invisible mark identifies the heart’s intent,
Our signature written in dust erases all we meant.
