--- In the Heart of the Day --–
By John Herlihy
As I lay my head down upon the blades of grass,
I gaze up into the heavens the blue sky to amass.
Freshly cut grass exudes the odor of life-giving sperm,
Arousing a dreamy wakefulness toward which I yearn.
Heavenly shades of blue make their way drip by drip,
Down into the imagination of my mind sip by tender sip.
The smells of musky earth tickle my nose with steam,
While the sun overhead easily disposes of its gleam.
A bee flies by as if inebriated by the nectar of a flower,
Flitting randomly for more honey in this earthly bower.
A grasshopper rears its ugly head to look into my eyes,
Nods gently and blinks, giving the appearance of being wise.
In the heart of the day, I have laid myself gently down in peace,
All the comfort of the natural world filling me without cease.
