-- An Infant Knows --

John Herlihy

An infant doesn’t know

From right and wrong.

But an infant does know

How to sing its own song.

An infant doesn’t know

It has no hair or teeth.

But an infant does know

A loving grace to bequeath.

An infant doesn’t know

Anything of race or color.

But an infant does know

Inborn love of its mother.

An infant doesn’t know

The ways of the world.

But an infant does know

The smoothness of a pearl.

An infant doesn’t know

The source of its distress.

But an infant does know

Sublime feelings in caress.

An infant doesn’t know

The true meaning of fear.

An infant does know

How to produce a tear.

An infant doesn’t know

What it needs to worry.

An infant does know

Beauty in a snow flurry.

An infant doesn’t know

What it has all meant.

But an infant does know,

When its heart is content.

An infant doesn’t know

How anything to defile,

But an infant does know

How to simply smile,

An infant doesn’t know

The secret of its desires.

But an infant does know

What only God inspires.

An infant knows how to pee & poop,
An infant though doesn't know how much they smell like a hot day in a chicken coop...:) -e-

Sweet. Covered all the nuances of an infant. You must have good memories of when you were one to write this. All I know is that infants have a huge brain that has some basics, but bright, wide open eyes and ears that pick up every sound, in the first few months gathering in their surroundings form a network of memory that will last until their dying day. What a wondrous thing infants are. So innocent at birth and while they are learning under the constant care of their mother.

I once read that we are at the most intelligent stage in our life when we are babies. We can get everything done for us, while we do nothing else, but eat, sleep, poop, and let others care for us. After we start to learn, it's all downhill from there.

Amen. Tender and moving. I imagine there are not just 7 wonders of the world in the eyes of a child, there must be at least 7 million. (-: Well done. Peace... r
