-- As Twilight Falls --
John Herlihy
Twilight fell in slanted lines, a Van Gogh painting,
But not for long, night arrived as a door slamming.
The North Star awoke, a beacon with a ready wink,
The horizon glowed red colors to die as pearl pink.
We rely on these rhythms of nature so as to know,
The world sets forth order into our souls to bestow.
Not every sunset provides such spectacular display,
Although who doesn’t appreciate such color in array.
Then there are those stars that come out one by one,
Little suns in their own right, from infinite light spun.
To stand as brave sentinels to make their own speech,
How they stir the heart even if they seem out of reach.
Fading light, lonely moon, brave little stars all enthrall,
While the voice of nature sings sweetly as twilight falls.
