-- AMID THE TOMBSTONES --

John Herlihy

On the tombstone nary a word

Graced at times by a solitary bird

Periwinkle green, glossy over ground

Stones amid briars and scrub pine around

A few lives been lived and now been done

A century passed, any memories none

Who were they and whatever did they do

Only the briar patch and scrub grass knew

Lives long ago once lived in love and pain

The names washed away by wind and rain

Nothing left but embellishment of curlicues

Like mourners kneeling among church pews

Silence reigns in this clearing of the woods

Crows in tree branches knelt in feathered hoods

Your last two lines make the poem, bringing close to mind the ghost town feeling most ancient tombstones in the west conjure up.

I love old cemeteries for their peace and ambience of lives at rest. As a writer I gain inspiration from the "stories" often found on those old tombstones. Its sad that in today's world the lives of many are not reflected in the sanitized versions of tombstones. But some survivors hold true to the old traditions and find ways of honoring their beloved dead with some added detail to the stone. Perhaps a picture or a favorite quote. It means those buried there will never really be forgotten.

As my grandchildren and I care for the graves of our family, we take a walk around the cemetery and read the stones. 'Enjoyed this very much, John.

Love ya!

So many old cemeteries hiding amongst the woods of NJ, some I have seen and some I have stopped at, but so many names from the distant past, yes, forgotten, never believed they could last...-e-

Only a few get remembered. The passage of time erases any traces of who and what they were. A couple of generations is all it takes to be forgotten. That's life.

My mom says ‘If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything’. Sorry mom but under the guise of poetic license I penned these beauties.
