-- STILL WONDERING --
By John Herlihy
A life stolen we always knew,
All signs of normality but few.
Surging sea without any salt,
As hard and brittle as cobalt.
Ragged cliffs on rugged shore,
Empty caves nothing to explore.
Endless light in a sunless sky,
Only the starless night on high.
No stars to speak of mystery,
No moon to nurture our fantasy.
A lake that cast no reflection,
A mirror that held no detection.
A man walks with no shadow,
No bumblebees in the meadow.
Birds leave no footprints in snow,
No harsh cry heard from the crow.
Birds draw no footprints in the sands;
The clock never ticks with no hands.
Bereft of life as we have come to know,
Now wondering, did the wind still blow?
If nature’s laws followed their own will,
We would be left only wondering still.
Instead, God’s will gives time its hour,
Still wondering at His miraculous power.
