-- LOST --

John Herlihy

There’s no end to counting whatever I lost.

Where did it all go and what was the cost?

Lost memories, lost hopes, and lost desires,

Hardly remember days my heart kindled fires.

What of all the minutes, the hours, the days,

Time as sand in our fingers as it slips away.

Then all the people who have come and gone,

All the emotions from my heart’s well drawn.

Lost journey, lost chances, that lonely lost road,

Croaking into my cups as that old wayside toad.

Everyone dreads the feeling of losing one’s goal,

To lose one’s way and only end up as a lost soul.

When I lost that key, I decided to take a stand,

Figure out a system to have at my command.

Whenever I lost a thing, I would just let it go,

Just forget about it, puff, gone, who would know.

The tide of life gives and the tide of life takes;

In washing away the chaff, it lowers the stakes.

I now more fully treasure what I have as mine,

Never lost and things found, a feeling sublime.

Growing older, I think, brings with it the wisdom of what is important rather than what we merely consider important. Is a text message as important as a voice on the phone, or, better, a voice in person? Is a corner office really as important as time spent watching your children grow up and become all they are capable of being? Are multiple nights out with our "buds" really as important as staying in and nurturing our relationships with our significant others? It's really too bad that so many of use reach our golden years without the meaningful memories that have made life worth living.

This poem is quite uplifting, especially for those who feel they have lost everything. Life is full of loss, and as a result of my accidental surgery when I was 20, much of life was inaccessible. Still, I have lived long and cherished everything I've been able to do. And not to waste time and energy on what I lost because there was always something new to gain up ahead. Best of all, I have not forgotten and am now at the stage where I can write down my memories with pride for having not wallowed in loss or need for companionship, but gone ahead on my own on my own, sometimes lonely, journey through life.

But from what I read from you, you already know what I'm writing about, for we have traveled similar journeys.

And though life is a swift moving current, always flowing forward, there is certainly an ebb and flow to it that allows us to pause and contemplate, and sometimes heal. Thank God for that. The writer reveals another part of himself in this. Enjoyed. r
