-- Lazy Summer Morning --
By John Herlihy
Just let it setltle in the mind and imagine,
The weeping willows hanging down low.
Life once had an easy feel we can hardly fathom,
The reeds wave as the wind did blow.
The night sure enough had slipped away,
Like a thief hoarding a darkness grim.
The fat, lazy sun, rose up to break the day,
Gone all those stars with night sky filled to the brim.
I had the whole river all on my own,
Yonder along the bank a log cabin in the middle.
As night slipped away, so too the spark of a candle,
A song skipping across waters from a farmer’s fiddle.
Days mighty free just sittin’ there, nothin’ on my mind,
As easy and comfortable as a rabbit in its briar.
The river slipped by quiet and smooth to pass the time,
The wavelets mumbling words my mind to inspire.
It was so silent, so still, but sounds come from afar,
Whether soft or harsh voices, they always seem to jar.
The river held little spears of light made from a falling star,
A breeze springs up, cool and fresh, on a day nothing can mar.
We lit pipes as our minds floated as the wind may blow,
The river current taking us wherever it wanted to go.
Nothing to hear, all the world to see, what nature had to tell,
All she ever taught us, as we lay under her magic spell.
