 -- What I Remember and Forget --

By John Herlihy

You will be surprised what I don’t remember,

So much happened with no need to recall.

A waste bin of all I forget, but those feelings tender,

Treasured memories I could never part with at all.

Forgive me if I have forgotten your name,

We met a few times under the parapets of Istanbul.

Why, even your face has blurred, leaving me in shame,

But there you have it, it’s not a question of will.

What about that dreadful day when I was betrayed,

The lies and deceit that could never be forgiven.

Feelings of anguish, revenge even that should have stayed,

Now pungent smoke and dreamy mist, by the wind driven.

What will never surprise you is what I never forget,

Each precious moment that never knew of vain regret.

I have a terrible memory, especially since my mini stroke in 2015. I've never been good with names but until recently I never forgot a face. That was not always a good thing...

What a powerhouse of words, John! A vision of your inner strength comes to mind. (Will I ever get caught up here at the Den? LOL!! )?
I love reading your words as always!

Love ya!

The brain is amazing. Even as we get older, we can still train ourselves to recall facts. I know, as a 70 yr. old I can still get 90's on test after focused study. As for names, they will be a blur after a short time. Faces are different, as is voice recall. I instantly recalled a friends voice on the phone who I have not heard from in over 55 years. Amazing poem, well said!
